Description

Castello del Poggio Moscato is a lightly effervescent, semi-sweet Italian Moscato bottled at approximately 7% ABV in a standard 750ml format. Scored 85 points by Wine Enthusiast on the 2022 vintage and featured in Vivino’s 2017 Wine Style Awards for Italian Moscato d’Asti, this bottling has become one of the most recognized Moscato labels in the category.
Quick Facts: ABV: 7%  |  Origin: Piedmont, Italy  |  Style: Semi-Sweet Sparkling (Frizzante)  |  Producer: Castello del Poggio  |  Varietal: Muscat
Production & Heritage
Castello del Poggio sources Muscat grapes from vineyards in Italy’s Piedmont region, the historic heartland of Moscato d’Asti production. During winemaking, fermentation is allowed to proceed in a controlled, temperature-regulated environment until the wine reaches roughly 5–7% alcohol and internal pressure builds to approximately 5–6 atmospheres. Winemakers then halt fermentation by rapidly chilling the wine and filtering out the yeasts, a technique that preserves the grape’s natural residual sugar and aromatic intensity while producing the wine’s signature gentle sparkle.
Tasting Notes
Aroma: The nose opens with candied apricot and fresh orange blossom, followed by layers of ripe white peach and candied pear. A subtle honeyed sweetness ties the aromatics together.
Taste: On the palate, the entry is delicately sweet with juicy pear and fig flavors coming forward immediately. The mid-palate broadens into golden raisin and white flower notes, balanced by crisp acidity that prevents the sweetness from becoming cloying. The body is light with an agile, elegant structure that stays compact throughout.
Finish: The finish is clean and moderately short, leaving behind traces of fresh peach and a gentle honeyed sweetness. A final lift of effervescence refreshes the palate.
How to Drink Castello del Poggio
Serve well chilled, between 40–45°F (4–7°C), in a flute or tulip glass to showcase the delicate bubbles and aromatic profile. This Moscato also works as a versatile ingredient in lower-ABV cocktails. A Moscato Spritz — combining the wine with a splash of sparkling water and fresh peach slices — highlights its natural fruit character. A Moscato Sangria with sliced stone fruits and a touch of elderflower liqueur builds on its floral backbone. For a simple warm-weather highball, a Moscato Mule substituting the wine for vodka alongside ginger beer and lime brings effervescence and sweetness without excessive alcohol.
Best For
Introducing wine newcomers to Italian sparkling styles
Pairing with brunch dishes or light dessert courses
Warm-weather gatherings and outdoor entertaining
A lower-alcohol alternative at dinner parties
Frequently Asked Questions
What does Castello del Poggio Moscato taste like? It delivers forward flavors of juicy white peach, ripe pear, and fig, balanced by crisp acidity and a delicate sweetness. Light effervescence and orange blossom notes give it a refreshing, aromatic character.
How does Castello del Poggio compare to Bartenura Moscato? Both are popular semi-sweet Italian Moscatos, but Castello del Poggio tends to lean slightly more floral and peach-driven, while Bartenura — a Moscato d’Asti from Piedmont — is often described as having a touch more honeyed richness. Both sit in the same approachable price tier and ABV range, making them direct alternatives on retail shelves.
Is Castello del Poggio good for beginners? Its low alcohol content (around 7% ABV), gentle sweetness, and easy-drinking fruit profile make it one of the most accessible entry points into Italian sparkling wine.
Where is Castello del Poggio made? Castello del Poggio produces this Moscato from Muscat grapes grown in Italy’s Piedmont region, a northern Italian area renowned for centuries of Moscato d’Asti winemaking.
What foods pair well with Castello del Poggio Moscato? Fresh fruit tarts complement its peach and pear notes. Soft, creamy cheeses like mascarpone or burrata echo its delicate texture. Prosciutto-wrapped melon offers a sweet-savory contrast. Lemon panna cotta mirrors its citrus-edged acidity. Spicy Thai or Vietnamese dishes benefit from the wine’s residual sugar, which tempers heat.
What sizes does Castello del Poggio come in? The standard bottling is a 750ml format, which is the most widely available size.
Is Castello del Poggio worth the price? Positioned as an entry-level Moscato, it delivers consistent quality and scored 85 points from Wine Enthusiast, placing it among the stronger values in the everyday Italian sparkling category.
Why Castello del Poggio?
What separates this Moscato from the crowded field of sweet Italian sparklers is the cold-arrest fermentation method, which locks in fresh Muscat aromatics at a notably low 7% ABV while maintaining balanced residual sugar. The 85-point Wine Enthusiast score on the 2022 vintage and inclusion in Vivino’s 2017 Wine Style Awards confirm it performs above its price tier. Its light body and gentle effervescence make it genuinely versatile — equally at home alongside a dessert course or standing on its own as a chilled afternoon pour. For drinkers seeking a reliably well-made, aromatic Moscato from Piedmont, Castello del Poggio remains a benchmark at its level.
